Description
The encoded protein belongs to the family of inward rectifier potassium channels, specifically the G protein-coupled inwardly-rectifying potassium channel family. These potassium channels facilitate a higher influx of potassium into the cell than efflux. They play a role in regulating various physiological processes, such as cardiac cell heart rate and neuronal cell circuit activity, by responding to G-protein coupled receptor activation. Mutations in this gene have been linked to Keppen-Lubinsky Syndrome, a rare condition characterized by profound developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, and intellectual disability.
